Max Verstappen took Red Bull to the top on both practice sessions in Bahrain on Friday.
The Dutch driver confirmed the good pace shown by the Austrian team in the pre-season testing on the same track, with new teammate Sergio Perez coming tenth and eight in the first and second sessions, respectively.
Verstappen’s fastest lap of the day came in the second practice, as he set a 1.30s847 lap time followed by Lando Norris and Lewis Hamilton. In the morning, Valtteri Bottas came second with Norris closing the top 3.
While the McLarens looked great, Aston Martin wasn’t able to show its full pace. Lance Stroll finished eight in the morning and 13th in the second session, with teammate Sebastian Vettel coming in 13th and 14h, respectively. Nicholas Latifi completed 50 laps, coming in 19th and 18th in the sessions.
“Not the easiest day for us”, said Lance Stroll after the second practice. “We definitely have the work cut out for us tonight. The other teams are quite competitive, so we’ll have to put our thinking caps on and come back stronger tomorrow.”
On P2, 2007 world-champion Kimi Räikkönen crashed into the barriers, knocking the front-wing off his Alfa Romeo.
The cars are back on track on Saturday, with Practice 3 scheduled for 8 AM EST and the qualifying starting at 11 AM EST.
